Prairie Wild uses no-till seed drills that can plant into sites that have had existing vegetation eliminated with herbicides. We can also plant into a well packed field that was previously disced and either packed mechanically or by rain or snow to firm the soil before planting.
Prairie plantings need a firm seed bed to ensure good seed to soil contact. Spring plantings will need packing if the soil is loose from cultivation.
As a general guideline, if walking on the soil compacts it more than 1/2 inch, the soil is too loose and will need packing.
